Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started with ContextAI, from privacy and providers to how your history is stored and handled.

What is ContextAI?

ContextAI is a macOS app that summarizes or translates any text you copy. Select text in any app, press ⌘C twice, and the result appears in the notch — no window switching, no paste box.

Where is my history stored?

Your history is stored locally on your Mac. ContextAI does not use cloud sync, user accounts, or server-side storage.

Does ContextAI upload my copied text?

Copied text is sent only to the AI provider you connected — ChatGPT, OpenAI, or OpenRouter — to generate the summary or translation. ContextAI has no servers of its own and never stores your content anywhere else.

Which AI providers are supported?

You can sign in with your ChatGPT account, use an OpenAI API key, or connect OpenRouter to pick from many models. Your provider, your model.

Can I revisit previous items?

Yes. Every capture is saved to history, and both Summary and Translation stay available as tabs on each item, so you can reopen anything later.

Will it react to every copy?

No. A single ⌘C never triggers anything. ContextAI only activates on a deliberate double ⌘C, so your normal copy workflow stays untouched.

Can I dismiss a result quickly?

Yes. Press Escape and the notch closes immediately — even while a response is still streaming, it will not reopen on its own.

Can I send results to other apps?

Yes. Plugins let you save a result to Notion or Obsidian in one click, and you can copy it to the clipboard anytime.

Is ContextAI a subscription?

No. ContextAI is free. You bring your own AI provider — a ChatGPT account or an API key — and pay only for what your provider charges.

How do I install the app?

Download the DMG, drag ContextAI to Applications, and launch it. It needs macOS 15 or later, and the app checks for updates itself and tells you when a new version is ready to install.
